Cash-Flow Basics for Seasonal Rural Businesses
July 12, 2026
Profit and cash are not the same. A seasonal business may show strong annual sales but still struggle when payroll, repairs, taxes, or inventory are due before customers pay.
Build a 12-month cash-flow forecast. Include conservative sales estimates, payment delays, owner pay, taxes, insurance, debt, fuel, maintenance, and major purchases.
Create a reserve during strong months. Ask for deposits, shorten invoice terms, follow up quickly on overdue accounts, and negotiate supplier terms before the slow season.
Separate personal and business accounts. Review cash weekly during peak and low periods. Early information gives the owner more choices.
